How do you theme Google Chrome?

How, you may ask, do you customize the Google Chrome browser to something more appealing? Maybe you like yellow instead of that pasty blue color? Or perhaps pink? Maybe you’re tired of that plain white background whenever you create a new tab? Maybe, just maybe, you’re too much more interesting to cope with such blandness.

Well, to get a bit techy (briefly), Google Chrome themes are packaged as a 7-Zip archive with some customized bytes at the beginning of the file (known as a header) and a “.crx” file extension. If you want to create such a theme you have some learning to do. Within the archive is a “manifest.json” file which contains a load of mark-up in the JSON language format (lost yet?). This file specifies all the images and colors within the theme. The color declarations are in the form of both RGB (Red Green Blue) and HSB (Hue Saturation Brightness), which, to mortal man isn’t a trivial task to understand unless you work with imaging software such as Photoshop or are a day to day nerd. If you enter anything incorrectly then it will all go Pete Tong when you attempt to create the theme in Google Chrome. And on and on. So, have you given up yet or are you still listening?

Franky, there are easier ways to theme Google Chrome without getting into the nitty gritty nerdy techy stuff known only to geeks. Have a look at http://www.themechrome.net for example. This is a nifty little website which provides a plethora of wallpaper backgrounds for you to choose for your Chrome browser. When you’ve settled for a nice Lamborghini Gallardo, Domo Kun, or even Severus Snape wallpaper, then this is where the fun begins! ThemeChrome.net let’s you completely change aspects of the browser such as the text color in the main window, the hyperlinks, the little window frame that pops up on the quicklinks, and also the color of the tabs and the window frame. It’s not hard to do either :- you click the little color boxes and select the color you want in the color picker that pops up. You can alter aspects of the background image as well, such as aligning it to any corner of the browser window, repeat any which way but loose, or even to have the image dynamically resized to fit the resolution of your own computer (how clever!).

So that’s it really. Go from bland old blue Google Chrome to a Funky Pink Severus Snape Google Chrome in a matter of seconds. If you don’t like Severus Snape (and who does), then I’d recommend searching for Cameron Diaz or the gorgeous Evangeline Lilly.
